Tape-in extensions are a simple solution when you're struggling with hair that feels too short or too thin. Like other types of hair extensions, they can create volume, length, or both in a matter of minutes. However, the downside to any long-term hair extension is that it grows out and routinely needs to be reapplied. If you've ever tried to re-do your tape-in extensions at home, you'll know that one of the hardest parts is actually removing the adhesive from the extension once you've safely removed it from your hair. But a hack to make this part of the process easier has made its way to TikTok.

When it comes to getting rid of the old adhesive, you'll just need a trusty ingredient that you probably already have in your bathroom: talcum powder. This naturally absorbent product will suck up the sticky residue and help the old adhesive to come away from the extension. Note that some brands of talcum powder may contain harmful chemicals, so if you don't want to use this product, you could use an alternative powder such as corn starch or talc-free baby powder, to the same effect (via MedCart Australia).

How to prepare and re-tape your old extensions

Once you've removed your hair extensions, you need to take off the old adhesive and apply a new one. This is where the talcum powder comes in. Pour a little powder in a flat bowl, and then dip the adhesive tab of the hair extension (which tapes to your hair) into it face down, patting the top of it to really ensure the powder comes into contact with the adhesive. After a few seconds, simply take the hair extension out and peel off the adhesive — it should come off with ease.

The hair extensions experts at Zala advise making sure that there's no residue left on your old extensions before moving to the next step. Then take some new extension tape and apply it to the extension. There are lots of options available for extension tape online, such as these Aymorder pre-cut double-sided tabs. Otherwise, you can get your hairdresser to order some for you. Once the sticky side is applied to each extension, peel off the back and reapply to your hair.

Why it's so important to take care with tape-in extensions

Before you try tape-in extensions, you need to know that they can cause a range of problems if they're not applied and removed properly. Belgravia Centre, a clinic specializing in hair loss, notes that they can cause female hair loss because removal can damage your strands, especially if you take them out soon after applying them when the adhesive is still strong. This is why experts often recommend allowing your hairdresser to apply and remove your tape-in extensions. If you struggle with removing the extensions because the adhesive is still bonded to the hair, you may seriously weaken the follicles or even yank out clumps of hair.

If you are going to do it yourself, Foxy Locks recommends first loosening the tape with a rat tail comb. Then cut it out with nail scissors. Don't tug! If there's adhesive left in your hair, you can get it out with acetone-free nail polish remover, or a tape-in extension remover, like this one from Piaou. You can also use a natural non-chemical-based oil, such as almond oil or baby oil (via Luxe Remi). To avoid causing any unnecessary damage to your hair, take your time to remove your tape-in extensions. With talcum powder on your side, the next step of the process will only take seconds, and you'll be well on your way to having fresh extensions again.
