French Toast

We’re not sure why it’s called French toast, especially since in France it’s known as pain perdu, or “lost bread.” But French toast, or eggy bread as it’s known in England, is a delicious and versatile breakfast specialty. Thick bread slices are soaked in a combination of eggs and milk and fried in butter. Variations include the addition of spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, vanilla or almond extract, and toppings such as powdered sugar, maple syrup, or fresh fruit. Baking instead of frying yields a light and fluffy French toast.
