The name bruschetta comes from the Italian word, bruscare, which means to roast over coals. In the classic version, thick cut slices of bread are toasted over an open flame and topped with a fresh mixture of chopped tomatoes. Bruschetta is served as an appetizer or snack. In Italy bruschetta can be as simple as toasted bread scraped with garlic cloves and drizzled with olive oil.
