How Much Fat Should I Eat?

How Much Fat Should I Eat?

How much fat should I eat? Have you ever asked that question? What about this one, how much fat should I eat (even the good kind) and how much fat is too much? Here is what you need to know about your fat consumption:

The USDA estimates that you should take in 20 to 35 percent of your total calories from fat. If you eat 1,800 calories a day, that works out to between 360 and 630 calories from fat (or 40 to 70 fat grams).

More important than the amount of fat you eat is the type. Trans fats are the worst for your heart and overall health, while consuming close to but not more than 35 percent of your calories from healthier fats such as those found in olive oil, nuts and fish may actually improve your odds against disease.

People who follow a Mediterranean diet, which is chock-full of healthy fat, have low rates of heart disease and long life expectancies. Plus, fat is satiating, so it can stave off hunger and help you eat less overall. [via]

Katrina Bowden Skinny or Anorexic?

Is Katrina Bowden skinny? Yes! Is Katrina Bowden anorexic? No! But when Katrina, 20, hit the red carpet for the Emmys, her frail frame and sunken chest were no laughing matter. “It’s just disturbing,” says an onlooker of 5′9″ Katrina. “Her shoulder bones are popping out. Look at her sternum you can actually see her ribs!”

Two weeks ago, it was reported that Katrina weighed 110 pounds, and shockingly, it seems that she is now even lighter. Does she eat enough calories? I do not know, but if her weight continues to slide, she has to eat more. [source: Star]

Weight Loss Smoothie

Weight Loss Smoothie

Is there such a thing as a weight-loss smoothie? Jamba Juice seems to think so. They claim that their weight-loss smoothie contains the weight burner, which helps reduce body fat. Imagine that, apparently, all you need to do to lose weight and burn body fat is to drink a weight-loss smoothie.

So why would they claim that their weight-loss smoothie aids weight loss? It turns out that they add CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) to it. By their own admission, CLA only works if you take it for about 12 weeks in addition to exercise and a healthy diet.

Right, so to lose weight, you would need to drink a weight-loss smoothie for at least 12 weeks, but you would also need to exercise and follow a healthy diet. Now lets think about this for a second.

If you are overweight and need to lose some weight, what happens when you exercise and follow a healthy diet? Right, so this or any other weight-loss smoothie, which by the way is loaded with sugar, is completely useless.

Vladimir Putin Judo DVD

Have you heard about Vladimir Putins judo DVD? It is called Lets learn judo with Vladimir Putin. The obvious question here is: what does Vladimir Putins judo DVD has to do with Putin?

It turns out that Vladimir is a black belt in Judo. No kidding! I doubt he would last very long in a UFC fight, but he does know some moves.

And there is something else. It seems that Putins judo DVD was put together from a much earlier footage of him. He looks a lot younger and fitter in it. The DVD is not available in the U.S., not yet at least.

Question: Would you buy Vladimir Putins judo DVD if it was available in the U.S. right now? [via]

Blue Corn Chips

Blue Corn ChipsTortilla chips are not the healthiest snack, but choosing ones made with blue corn may provide some advantages. Researchers in Mexico found that blue corn chips have 20 percent more protein and 9 percent less starch than those made with white corn.

Compared with yellow or white corn chips, blue corn chips are lower on the glycemic index, the measure of a food’s effect on the body’s blood-sugar level. Some studies indicate that a low-glycemic diet is linked with weight loss and improves insulin sensitivity.

Blue corn chips are also richer in anthocyanins, antioxidants that trap free radicals to prevent cell damage. Researcher Luis A. Bello-Perez says the lower glycemic index of blue corn chips may benefit dieters and diabetics. [source: Allure]
