Retro Home Decor Description Oho! I havent seen this in real life yet, but thats my design for the room divider, and I designed a shag rug and a flower power pillow for Caron yarns, so I suspect that those might be my designs in there, too.. Ill have to track down a copy of the booklet. :o) Happy Retro Crochet! Noreen

Butterfly Bag Crochet along-12-another new butterfly

Theres just something about May. It seems that every year, in May, I get butterflies.. not in my stomach, but in my sketchbook, and on my hooks. This year it happened again. I have been tatting butterflies like mad for my daughters wedding dress (I gave the pattern for the silk tatted butterflies in my previous posting: Tatted Butterfly) Last week, I was looking at the tatted butterflies, and I thought: I should design a crocheted butterfly based on the tatted butterfly So, I got out my hooks and yarn and thread: crochet-along-butterfly-bag-33-qs.jpg In the upper left hand corner, is one of the tatted butterflies. To the right of it, I did a very literal interpretation of the tatted butterfly. Mmmm - could be better, so I kept working on it. I decided that I wanted the butterfly to be more essential, and so I took out the extra picots in the upper wing, and used the yarn ends as the antenae. Elegant simplicity, and excellent use of materials! I am pleased. It works well in yarn or thread: crochet-along-butterfly-bag-35-qs.jpg I am crocheting them in silk thread for my daughters wedding gown, and in yarn and thread for my crochet-along-butterfly bag that I began weeks and weeks ago. Butterfly bag Crochet along Here is the pattern for my newest butterfly motif:
  • its my original design, so is copyright.
Noreens butterfly: (The finished size of the butterfly is determined by the size of hook and thickness of yarn or thread that you use) Body: Ch 6, (leaving a tail of yarn a few inches long) 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each of remaining 4 ch (5 sl st). Head: Ch 3, join to last st ofBody, then to next sl st of Body. First Upper Wing: Ch 13, join with sl st to 1st ch. Ch 1, turn, 9 sc, Picot: Ch 5, join with sl st to last sc. 7 sc in ring, picot, 2 sc. Sl st in next 3 sl st along body. First Lower Wing: Ch 9, sl st last ch to 1st, ch 1, 2 sc, take hook out of loop, insert in last picot of upper wing, pick up dropped loop and continue (picot join made). 5 sc, picot, 7 sc, sl st to stitch at tip of Body. Second Lower Wing: Ch 9, sl st to 9th ch from hook, ch 1, turn, 7 sc, picot, 5 sc, picot, 2 sc. Sl st in next 3 st along Body. Second Upper Wing: Ch 13, join last ch to 1st ch, ch 1, turn, 2 sc in ring, work picot join to Lower Wing. 7 sc, picot, 9 sc, join to Body with sl st. Cut end, leaving a few inches for antenae. Tie a knot with starting yarn end. Weave antenae ends through head. I am making heaps of these little butterflies for the wedding and for the crochet along butterfly bag a great project, as its so portable! Butterfly Blessings! Noreen

Our daughter is getting married this summer. :D Ive already crocheted her shawl (from silk that I handspun). I designed the shawl for Knit.1 magazine last summer. Heres a pic Wedding Shawl Shes sewing her dress, and I am tatting butterflies to stitch to the bodice and train. Well be stitching them onto the dress, with a freshwater pearl stitched into the open space in the body. I designed this little butterfly several years ago. Its made with just one shuttle: Noreens Tatted Butterfly (copyright) tatted-butterfly-2qs.jpg First Lower Wing: in ring, work 7, p, 5, p, 2; close. First Upper Wing: In ring: work 2, join to p of Lower Wing, 7, p, 1, p, 1, p, 9, p, 1, close. Head: In ring: 1, join to picot of upper wing, 1, long picot for antenae, 1, p, 1, close. Second Upper Wing: In ring: 1, join to picot of head, 9, p, 1, p, 1, p, 7, p, 2, close. Second Lower Wing: In ring: 2, join to picot of upper wing, 5, p, 7, close. Tie a tight knot to beginning thread end. You can make them tiny, or use yarn, and tat it large Happy Butterflies! Noreen

Have Loom Will Travel

For my entire adult life, I have been passionate about small loom weaving. I find weaving on small looms to be utterly delight filled and totally inspiring. Because of this love, I design all kinds of projects for small loom weaving. I also teach workshops in small loom weaving. This summer, Ill be teaching workshops that are about inspiring people to combine small loom weaving with crochet, knitting and other fiber arts. So, Ill be trundling off, with a bag full of small looms and inspiration! have-loom-will-travel-1qs.jpg One of the great advantages of small looms is their portability. When I travel, I always carry yarn, threads, spoolknitters, tatting shuttles, crochet hooks, and small looms. A friend laughingly called me a bag lady, because I never go anywhere without a project bag full of fiber arts tools and yarn. We live on a small farm, and when Jim and I drive to the city, he drives and I work on portable projects.
  • I know that lots of people turn up their noses at plastic looms, but I quite like them. One time we were zooming along, and hit an unexpected bump. I was weaving on a metal potholder loom, and when we umphed over the bump, the loom came baloomping at my face. I had a vision of wearing a permanent line of dots across my forehead. After that, I switched to carrying plastic potholder looms when travelling.
  • Before you buy a plastic potholder loom, hold it in your hands and give it a slight twist. If it doesnt flex, then its a good one. Flexing is NOT desirable in a potholder loom, so if it has give, give it a pass.
Recently, I discovered another wonderful plastic loom, the Mini Loom from Schacht. Its a lovely little loom, and is an excellent travel companion! I am very inspired by and delighted with it! have-loom-will-travel-2qs.jpg Ill have it with me when I teach this summer. It will be one of the small looms that workshop participants will have an opportunity to play with. Back to my weaving:) Noreen
