Fierce Hugs organic cotton baby t-shirt Who says that Twitter is a waste of time? Hey, I discovered Fierce Hugs there today!

Fierce Hugs is a little company that specializes in ethical and affordable organic cotton baby tees and onesies.

These are original designs by two independent artists: Dagmar Meinders from The Netherlands, and Silvia Osella from Torino, Italy, whose work includes the Confused Cloud illustration shown on the little t-shirt here.

The t-shirt is $24 and comes in three sizes: 6-12 months, 12-18m, and 18-24m. The same design is also available in 0-3m and 3-6m as a bodysuit, but that’s just far too cute to show you here.

Sew Your Own Dog Collar Cover

Home sewing fans know the satisfaction of making their own fashions. Now you can doll up your dog with the leftover fabric remnants, and set out in matching style!

Embellishment is the key word for high-end handmade dog clothes, so download Penny Sanford’s easy free pattern and sew a variety of these slip-on bandana scarf or tube-type covers… then decorate them up to be one-of-a-kind works of wearable art.

Your dog may not go out of his way to thank you, but this could be a wonderful fun project to do with a young pet-lover, if you have a young friend who wants to learn how to sew or do embroidery, etc., over the summer holidays. (And don’t skimp on the sequins!)

Now all I’ve got to do is figure out a variation on this pattern to dress up my greyhound’s martingale style collar that slips over the dog’s head in one piece instead of unbuckling…

    Father Hugos Yellow Rose

    Father Hugo’s Yellow Rose

rosa hugonis The first rose to bloom in my garden is Rosa xanthina f. hugonis, syn. ‘Father Hugo’s Rose’ — the golden rose of China, as it’s sometimes called. I just call it Father Hugo — like a comforting old friend.

Every year this yellow rose surprises me with how very many buds appear on its long arching canes, how quickly the buds develop, and how very showy those pale gold cups of flowers are during their brief time of bloom. The leaves and buds are tiny, compared to many rose bushes; yet the flowers are relatively large although they’re single.

    Yes, it’s an old-fashioned rose.

If memory serves, Father Hugo’s rose was written up with enthusiasm by gardeners as a new discovery just before the First World War: and who Father Hugo might have been, I have no idea. It’s not well known these days, giving way in popularity to the new and improved varieties with a longer blooming period and a tidier habit of growth.

True, this is not a rose for every garden or every gardener.

Winter wind and ice is hard on Father Hugo, breaking the long canes, and it sprawls around and spreads those long canes like a skirt on the ground. Use mulch, if you don’t want a constant battle to trim the edge of the lawn around it, the way my rose edges into lawnmower territory in its growth. The thorns are like organic barbed wire, too, so pruning back the dead wood in the spring is not a whole lot of fun.

But it’s all worth it for the early pale gold cascades of roses… lovely!

My rosa hugonis grows well on a gentle sunny slope at the edge of the driveway– it doesn’t seem to need very rich soil at all, fortunately — where it can tumble around at will. In a small garden, however, I think I’d be inclined to experiment with an espalier against a fence or wall.

    Chunky Princess

polymer bead princessMichelle Zink packs good humour into every polymer bead she creates, from retro Flower Power beads to fairies and clown faces and jungle or farmyard critters.

You’ll find Michelle at home in a small coastal Oregon town with 2 dogs, 4 cats, 11 chickens & Petals, her goat (oh, and a couple of teenagers, too)… and you’ll find her original polymer creations on her website, Michelle’s Clay Beads.

Right now I’m crazy about the Chunky Princess beads from her Fantasy beads collection. And please don’t get me started on her silly bee beads, or those tiny polymer ice-cream cones…

Tie down your wallet, crafters! Yes, she does take custom orders.

    Houndstooth Hobo

    black-and-white houndstooth hobo bag

Check it out: this is my new black-and-white houndstooth check hobo bag, no label — $6.99 only! My frugal heart leapt for joy when I spotted this.

The bag has one big exterior pocket with a snap, and inside is a silky black lining with a good-sized zipper pocket and another smaller open pocket that’s the perfect size for keys or an mp3 player or such. The main part of the bag zippers up, too, so nothing falls out when I drop it oh-so-casually onto the nearest flat surface, which I am sadly prone to do — but then, aren’t we all?

So yes, I went purse-shopping in the hospital gift shop while my mother was having a pre-op poking and prodding… how bad it that?

But after all, it’s not like I abandoned her in her hour of need, and it’s not like I didn’t urgently need a new bag (because I did), and it’s not like I spent a whole lot of money either… did I mention, $6.99?!
