Mom- lets make sugar free cookies to sell at the cafeteria- Makes my heart proud!

Here is a true story from my life this week: My eldest daughter woke up on the second day of school with a very bad stomach ache, blurry vision, a dizzy head, tingly fingers and very thirsty. I asked if I could check her bloodsugar- after all I am a nurse and a diabetic right?

She of course ran in the other direction screaming no. She sucked down 3 glasses of water and got on the school bus and all was well until mid day. I received a phone message from the school nurse. ‘Ms. James, no urgency but could you please call us back, we have K in the nurse office”.

I called back and the nurse wanted to know if she had missed something on the health form since K had come to her office and said, “My belly and head hurts and I am thirsty and my Mom thinks I am a diabetic”!

In no way did I say she was diabetic ,I explained, but I guess she deduced that by me wanting to check her sugar she had diabetes. I reassured the nurse and all was well. Then when K got home she said, “Mom, if you want to call my teacher at home she has a son that has what I do and she said she can answer any questions”.

I asked, “well, what it is that you have”?

She answered diabetes and I couldn’t help but smile. I explained at length that she does not have diabetes and what it means to have low versus high blood sugar and how it affects so many children and it is not something to take lightly. She understood all that I said and then she said, and this is were you just look at your kids and want to eat them up…

“Mom, we should go to the store and buy stuff to make sugar free cookies for the cafeteria to serve to all he diabetic children in my school. And we should also teach the kids what it means and what to watch for”!

My heart was proud. She is so sweet!! And even a diabetic Mom can eat her up!

Back to school journal 8/29/08

Oh boy- this week is flying by! My diet has been so darn good this week- I think it is because the kids are back in school. The snacks are not around and I actually have a second to cut up some fruit or mix some granola and yogurt, it is like a vacation. I do work 3-4 days a week but having to house with just one little girl in the morning has proved to be so relaxing!

On to numbers, I did all 2 hour post sugar checks. BS were between 87 and 116. That means I am doing good, right?

I need to get my butt exercising- that is for sure. I am feeling nasty and lazy and flabby- but like I said above I have been so darn relaxed. My goal for this afternoon is to ride the elliptical and lift- going to really push for it!

How about you? How has your week been?

Other intake this weekend was good- salad last 2 nights for dinner and scrambled eggs one day and veggies and cheese the other- counting Friday.

Bloodsugars were morning and night- 81-99 and one 116 today after eating breakfast.

We were on the go all darn weekend and then I worked tonight- very busy. I did do situps and small weights.

The doughnut hole threatens diabetcs- and I dont mean the kind you eat
By: Diabetes Notes    6 days 4 hours 41 minutes ago

Here is another reason that we see so many admissions to hospitals due to diabetic complications… the doughnut hole. Just what is this you ask? Medicare beneficiaries were responsible for pay as soon as they incurred costs of $2,400 among pharmacy costs. After a beneficiary then spent $3,850 out of their own pocket- coverage kicked in again. That coverage gap is commonly referred to as the doughnut hole. Mind you this doesnt apply to low-income seniors who qualify for a subsidy.

It was found that 15% of those who hit the doughnut hole stopped taking their medication all together and another 1% cut back on their medication use…while 5% switched medications. So darn scary. Just think what this does to an elderly persons diabetes. We need to come up with solutions to end these type of problems. I don’t have the answers- wish I did, but here is to finding something that is beneficial for all!
