Olivelse Ukulele

Every month, I look forward to receiving notice of the new batch of "Forest Finds" from Danny at Fawn and Forest. Curated by Irene from Bloesem, this month's batch was particularly good. One standout is the series of unique ukuleles from French design team Olivelse. Each plush instrument is handcrafted in France from jolly, 100% cotton, fabrics. No two are alike, but if strummin' on the ole ukulele leaves your kid droolin' for more, you can get a matching bib.

A battery-free torch

This penguin torch caught my eye in the window of our local eco-shop, purely because it looked so cute. Then my daughter's torch conked out; she claimed she couldn't go to sleep without one; I remembered this one, went into the shop, and found out there was so much more to it than looks.

I particularly wanted to share my discoveries with Babygadget readers because I don't think it is being particularly marketed towards the parents of pre-schoolers - yet, in many ways it's a perfect torch for threes and up. Here's the thing; no batteries.

No batteries, so no problem if it happens to get left on. No problem if it runs dry, either. It's powered by an internal dynamo, which you trigger by repeatedly squeezing the penguin's pop-out wing: that's the only reason I'd say it's best for the over-threes, as that action does require a bit of gumption, and hands that are big enough to envelop the whole body of the torch.

My daughter loves it, and had no problems figuring out how to power it up and how to switch it off again (it preserves any energy you've built up). I can also see it being a real asset on camping trips, sleepovers, you name it.

Crunch Can Hamper

If you're looking to put a little touch of color into your child's room or to compliment some color already there, consider these cute Crunch Can hampers in either blue or pink. While I'm not so cool with the use of more gender specific colors, I do like the simplicity of the designs on these hampers. (I should note that there is a plain white one available). Of course, no one says you have to use these as hampers. Use them to store the ridiculous amount of toys you said you would never buy your kid but that, alas, you did. Bonus feature? Crunch them up to store them flat should you need to do so.

The Tipi chair - childish fun

There's a theory, isn't there, that the best artists are those who retain a childish view of the world? Well, going by that, Eero Aarnio ought to be riding round on a tricycle and eating rusks.

The Tipi chair is designed for adults, as far as I can see, but is one of those delightful products that would encourage even the most straight-laced among us to throw off the trappings of adulthood, climb on it, hug it, sit backwards upon it; and yet, you can see that it would function perfectly well as a sturdy piece of furniture, too.

If that's how adults would react, I am sure any child would embrace this piece even more so. I'm willing to have my daughter test that theory out, if anyone would like to send me one of these. At 1,950 Euros, I can see there might not be too many offers - but do be sure to leave us a comment below if you get one for yourself.

Petunia Pickle Bottom Diaper Bag

In my line of work, I see a lot of diaper bags. Great ones, too. But I have to say, if one were to design a bag just for me, this would be it. The combination of modern structural form with a soft, textured material (in this case one of my favorites: felt!) pretty much defines my design sensibilities. But enough about me...

Designed by Petunia Pickle Bottom, this contemporary bag features all the conveniences that parents-on-the-go come to expect (or demand): storage, storage, storage, as well as durability, and ease of cleaning. Great for moms or dads, details like the double stitched edges and custom antique brass hardware, make this bag a slam dunk. Available in heathered grey, olive, or black.
